Now… Let dive into these simple but effective techniques…
1. Drop A Number
If you sold a certain number of event tickets in Nigeria that you are very proud of, tell people. People tend to do things they see others do, it’s simple psychology. If you previously sold out tickets of the same event in any part of Nigeria the previous year you can use it as well to push sales for the current one. For example, if you sold five thousand tickets out of eight thousand last year, you can use that same number to push sales by saying something like “sold over 5K tickets last year! This year is going to be lit! Don’t wait till last minute to get yours.” This way you have informed them about the success of the previous as well as created anticipation for the next.
2. Drop A Name
Yes! Drop those big names to sell out! Who were the familiar personalities that attended the last one? Drop their names but do it creatively without creating any misunderstanding. For example, if Tiwa Savage attended your event, not to perform but just to enjoy her beautiful self, then you can drop it like “Bought your ticket to X event already? Don’t let others gist you about how Tiwa Savage’s crowd-stopping dance moves got the media talking. Go get your ticket now!” On the other hand, if you do have huge personalities attending, especially if they are headlining, feel free to drop their names, as long as it is within the terms of your agreement. This is a great way to draw the attention of people and secure their interest and in turn ginger them to get the ticket.
3. Play ‘the-fear-of-missing-out’ card
People tend to stay connected with what others are doing. No one likes to miss out on what they feel others are having a rewarding experience from. Nigerians would jump on any opportunity to “flex”. If you can creatively chip in the possibility of missing out on a rewarding experience, then you are on your way to selling out and securing more attendees. You can use either testimonials of people that attended the last event (try solicit for their feedbacks and keep records) or you can use footages or images on your promotional materials as well as other advertising/promotion channels.
4. Start Small
Most people don’t like to hear this. But this is not an attempt to belittle your event but a wise and age-long survival strategy for anything to survive. If you are organizing an event, and you hope to sell two-thousand tickets, make the first one-thousand tickets, deploy all the strategies mentioned above or below, and then create an impression of scarcity. You can say “only 1000 tickets for X-event, and the first 500 get X-amount off, when they purchase before X-time” this would create an impression that you have a goal and it increases interest. Now, if you are able to sell out the first one-thousand tickets, and you get more requests, with discretion you can then make another batch. When using the ‘early bird’ discount (where you take a certain percentage off the ticket price if attendees purchase early) ensure you maintain the event date so that you don’t give people a wrong impression.
5. Use Tickets
There are amazing softwares and websites, like AllEvents.ng that allows you to post an event in minutes, promote it and sell tickets as well. You can use either E-tickets or printed ones. If you have a lot of funds, maximize the different types of tickets available, if you are printing event tickets. You can use any of these: early bird, VIP, group or Promo. And each ticket has to be creatively used and priced to attract the different categories of attendees you are looking forward to hosting.
6. Create an Exceptional Customer Service
This is very important if you want to leave wonderful memories that will keep people on their toes every time you host your event in Nigeria. You’d hear people saying (and telling their friends) that “oh I attended X event last year and they did X and X. It felt so great. Attend, you’d see what I am saying.” In simple advertising terms this is called word-of-mouth advertising and it has been named one of the best, long-lasting and most reliable form of advertisement.
